What is Teeth Whitening?

Tooth whitening offers a highly efficient way to enhance the natural shade of your teeth without any tooth surface removal. People opt for teeth whitening for various reasons.

Each person has unique characteristics, and just like our hair and skin tones differ, so do the shades of our teeth. It's uncommon to have perfectly white teeth, and as we get older, our teeth may develop stains or discoloration.

At-home Whitening with Enlighten

At Delph Dental Practice, we offer a professional home whitening kit that ensures a safe and controlled process of gradually achieving your desired level of whiteness.

It's important to note that tooth whitening can only lighten your existing tooth color and is effective only on natural teeth. It does not have an impact on any types of artificial teeth, such as dentures, crowns, or veneers.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a method used to lighten the natural color of your teeth without causing any damage to the tooth surface. It does not have the ability to completely change the color of your teeth, but it can help in lightening the existing shade.

Why would I need teeth whitening?

There are several factors that might motivate you to consider teeth whitening. It's rare for individuals to naturally have perfectly white teeth, and as we age, our teeth can become more prone to discoloration.

Common culprits for teeth stains include certain food and drinks like tea, coffee, and red wine. Additionally, smoking can contribute to teeth staining. In some cases, staining can occur beneath the tooth surface due to antibiotics or microscopic cracks that trap stains.

What does tooth whitening involve?

Your dentist will assess your suitability for the teeth whitening treatment. If deemed appropriate, they will take impressions of your teeth to create custom-made whitening trays. Your dentist will guide you on how to use the trays effectively. The whitening product typically contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient. As these ingredients break down, oxygen enters the tooth enamel, resulting in a lighter tooth color. To track the progress, before and after photos will be taken at the dental practice, allowing you to visualize the changes achieved.

How long does whitening take?

Once your dentist has started the treatment, you will need to continue the treatment at home. This means regularly applying the whitening product over two to four weeks or even longer, for 30 minutes to one hour at a time.

How long will my teeth stay whiter?

The effects of whitening are thought to last up to two years. However, this will vary on the individual. The whitening is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth.

What are the side effects?

Certain individuals may experience tooth sensitivity during or after the whitening treatment. Others may notice discomfort in the gums, a sore throat, or white patches along the gum line. These side effects are typically temporary and tend to subside within a few days after completing the treatment. However, if any of these symptoms persist, it is advisable to contact the front desk team who can schedule an appointment for you to see your dentist.

What about whitening toothpastes?

Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining. Therefore, they may improve the overall appearance of your teeth. Whitening toothpastes may also help the effect to last, once your teeth have been professionally whitened.

When might tooth whitening not work?

Tooth whitening can only lighten your current tooth colour. It will not work on fillings, dentures, crowns, and veneers.

How can I look after my teeth once they have been whitened?

To maintain white teeth, it is beneficial to reduce the consumption of food and drinks that can cause staining. Additionally, quitting smoking can contribute to preventing discoloration and staining of the teeth.

On time, polite and patient oriented.
The dentist kept you informed about the ongoing procedures at all times and was constantly concerned about my comfort.
When all was finished I could not feel any rough bits or unevenness, that has to be a good sign of a "job well done".
Restored my faith in Dentists, thank you all.
